1/2-20 TPI = UNF ~ Unified National Fine thread.

1/2-28 TPI = UNEF ~ Unified National Extra Fine thread.

5/8-24 TPI = UNEF ~ 24 threads per inch.

The Remington 700 in .223 is usually 1/2x28″ and then .30 cal and above is usually 5/8x24″.
